WHAT IS KIDS KORNER?
Who are we?
Kids Korner is a student run community service organization under UCLA's Community Service Commission (CSC) that works with Los Angeles Family Housing to provide tutoring and mentoring to children (ages 4-16) living in a low-income, government subsidized housing community in North Hollywood.
What do we do?
Our volunteers commute to North Hollywood every Sunday to work with our service recipients. We pick the children up from their homes and bring them to our site room for the program. The first half is devoted to academic tutoring. Our service recipients attend overpopulated and understaffed public schools and often do not get the attention they need. We provide tutoring to bridge this gap in the form of individualized worksheets, homework help, and test preparation. In the second half of our program, we focus on the mentorship aspect. We plan fun activities (arts & crafts, games) as well as provide free time to give the children a chance to bond with the volunteers. Kids Korner also hosts quarterly educational field trips that are free of cost to our service recipients to provide broader learning opportunities as well as foster stronger relationships between the children and volunteers.
